How the City of Winsted got its name

The Village of Winsted was founded July 30, 1857, by Eli Lewis who purchased the land north of Main Avenue from Baptiste Campbell, who was a half Sioux Native American.

Lewis was originally from Winsted, CT and named the city after his hometown.

The name of Winsted was officially given to the town April 5, 1858, by the County Commissioners after a vote was taken in the township.

The town was incorporated as a city Aug. 27, 1887.
